The CLIL Roadmap sessions

Basics & Language Skills

CLIL, or Content and Language Integrated Learning, is all about integrating language into your lessons, and that’s exactly what this session covers.

Together, we will explore what CLIL is (and what it is not!), how it can be applied to your lessons, and how it relates to other language teaching methods.

We'll establish a solid foundation and dive into effective ways to use language skills to motivate and engage students.

  • The Definition of CLIL: Gain a clear understanding of what CLIL is and how it differs from other teaching approaches.
  • Common Misconceptions: Understand what CLIL is and isn’t to build a clear perspective.
  • Language as a Tool: Learn how language can be used as a tool within CLIL lessons.
  • Applying the Four Language Skills: Discover how listening, speaking, reading, and writing can be integrated effectively.
  • BICS & CALP: Understand the difference between everyday language skills and academic language proficiency and how to apply these in CLIL.

By the end of this session, you will have a solid foundation in CLIL and know how to implement language skills in your lessons to encourage and motivate student output.

"Working with Patrick is great, he quickly adepts to new situations and delivers what he promises. You notice his own teaching experience throughout his training sessions which make his examples and feedback very useful. He certainly helped the teachers to make their lessons even better and more fun for students."

    Scaffolding & Activity Design

In CLIL teaching, you are not only a subject teacher but also a language teacher, making scaffolding essential to structuring learning for your students.

This module covers how to use scaffolding techniques effectively without the need to put in a lot of extra work.

We will also dive into designing effective CLIL activities that encourage student participation and increased learning outcomes.

    • Understanding Scaffolding: Discover what scaffolding is (and isn’t) and how it supports both learning and language acquisition.
    • Types of Scaffolding: Learn about three types of scaffolding you can apply to your lessons.
    • Learning vs. Language Scaffolding: Understand the differences between scaffolding for learning content and for language development.
    • Designing engaging CLIL Activities: Learn to create effective CLIL activities that capture students' interest and enhance learning outcomes.
    • Essential elements of a CLIL Activity: Understand the components of a well-designed CLIL task that fosters student interaction and language use.

By the end of this session, you will be able to integrate scaffolding seamlessly into your lessons and design engaging CLIL activities that meet your students’ needs and promote active learning.

      Planning & Feedback

Effective CLIL lessons don't need to take long to prepare.

In this module, you’ll learn a step-by-step process that allows any CLIL teacher to prepare a lesson in just as much time as a regular lesson, while incorporating essential elements like scaffolding, language skills, and retrieval practice.

This session also covers the importance of feedback and assessment, exploring how to provide meaningful feedback on both language and content, and how to integrate CLIL principles into assessments.

      • Designing learning outcomes: Find out how to integrate language in your learning objectives without explicitly mentioning them.
      • The four lesson stages: Learn a structured approach to lesson planning with four lesson stages present in any lesson.
      • Effective feedback techniques: Explore six different types of feedback to support language and content learning.
      • Integrating language in assessments: Understand how to include language criteria within subject assessments to reinforce learning.

By the end of this session, you will be able to quickly prepare effective CLIL lessons and provide valuable feedback that supports student progress in both language and content.

"We had Patrick do both a workshop and a feedback session after lesson visits. Both were highly appreciated but it was the personal feedback on their lessons colleagues appreciated most in particular because of Patrick’s down-to-earth approach and extremely helpful tips and tops. We’ll definitely invite him again."
